Modern West is pleased to loan works by artist Xi Zhang to Bountiful Davis Art Center for the solo exhibition Strings: A Chance to Say Goodbye. On view May 30 through August 15, 2025.
Strings: A Chance to Say Goodbye presents Zhang’s deeply personal depictions of his grandmother’s final stages of life. Raised by her and shaped by her quiet, unconditional love, Zhang uses painting to process the disorientation and silence that accompanied her memory loss. The series reimagines her interior world through theatrical, emotionally charged compositions that blur the line between lived experience and imagined narrative.
Drawing from both Chinese ink traditions and Western abstraction, Zhang’s work layers expressionistic gesture and psychological depth. Figures drift through dreamlike landscapes where memory, grief, and longing converge. These poignant visual spaces serve as sites of remembrance and empathy, inviting viewers into a shared space of emotional resonance.
Please join us on Friday, May 30 from 6-8 PM for the opening reception, as well as on Wednesday, June 18 from 2-4 PM for Idea Generator, a talk + workshop with the artist.
