Billy Schenck

1 January - 30 April 2023
These new landscapes intentionally focus on the large details of the West. Unique from his past landscapes, Schenck uses a much more limited and blended color palette to capture the compelling beauty of the western desert mesas in a more reductive manner. His relationship with color and space continues to push the boundaries of his work and his evolution as an artist.

Modern West is thrilled to announce an Online Exclusive Solo Exhibition of 13 new landscape paintings by multimedia artist Billy Schenck. In celebration of the anniversary of Schenck’s first ever landscape only exhibition--Utah--A Land Less Traveled--that nearly sold-out last January, we will be releasing 13 additional paintings to this important body of work. These paintings will be on view from January 1 through February 28, 2023, in an Online Exclusive Solo Exhibition.

Influenced by his childhood summers spent in the deserts, his landscapes exemplify his appreciation for western scenery and nostalgia for the iconic Wild West. Schenck creates his compositions by photographing numerous landscapes and layering multiple slides to visually convey his version of the West. His distinct flattened and reductivist paint-by-number style is juxtaposed by incorporating blended skies that play on depth, utilizing both Photo-Realism and Pop Art techniques in his recent works.

Schenck's work is prominent in over 60 museum collections and 25 corporate collections. He has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, and in January of 2022, exhibited works in two solo exhibitions in Utah at Modern West and Southern Utah Museum of Art. He is a World Champion Ranch Sorting winner and, with his partner Rebecca Carter, runs the Double Standard Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico, their home for the past two decades. Modern West is thrilled to continue representation of Schenck as he continues to push the boundaries of Western Myth.
