Ways of Seeing showcases Nathan’s creative process of introducing a slightly mysterious and ethereal storytelling sense to the documented local landscapes he paints on his colorful and sometimes wild paintings surfaces, resulting in artworks that communicate his sense of wholeness and beauty born out of chaos.
Modern West is thrilled to announce Ways Of Seeing, an exhibition by the Utah native, multi-disciplinary artist Nathan Florence. This exhibition will be on display May 19, 2023, through July 1, 2023.
With his exhibition Ways Of Seeing, Florence presents a suite of new paintings that depict the landscapes and environments of both his recent travels and daily routine in and around Salt Lake City. Employing a balanced blend of traditional, academic oil painting techniques coupled with an exploration into abstract mark-making, eye-catching color palettes, and uncommon, sometimes patterned painting surfaces, these landscape paintings depict familiar surroundings that are infused with a subtle sense of surrealism and mystery.
Nathan is a Salt Lake City based multi-disciplinary artist whose paintings document his love of the landscape and storytelling. They range from small landscape studies done on site, to large, figurative paintings done in the studio and commissioned portraits. His work is found in public and private collections around the world. Florence also produced and directed the critically acclaimed documentary, Bright Spark: the Reconciliation of Trevor Southey. His work also includes sculpture and photography.
In conjunction with the Ways Of Seeing exhibition, Florence is also offering an extraordinary opportunity to travel with him to Scotland this June 2023 for an exclusive artist workshop. Florence, alongside his sister Elizabeth Ashdown, will focus on developing the artistic eye through the mediums of painting and photography in an immersive week on Scotland's coastal highlands.
