EXCLUSIVE ARTIST Q&A

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER AS AN ARTIST?
I was born in rural Nebraska - art was always sort of an escape as well as means of communication when I was a youngster and continues to be that for me today.

HAVING GROWN UP IN NEBRASKA AND NOW LIVING AND WORKING IN KANSAS, HOW HAVE THE GREAT PLAINS INFLUENCED YOUR WORK OVER THE YEARS?
Two things contributed, bring raised in the open and minimalistic country with a big horizon, and in college studying various minimalist artists.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ETCHINGS. WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS? DO YOU WORK ON THESE IN TANDEM WITH YOUR PAINTINGS OR DO YOU SEE THEM AS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT REALM?
The Intaglio process began in college and then was revived later on a more fun and recreational basis - the technique is the same as Rembrandt used over 500 years ago.  Etchings have always been a good diversion from painting and allow me to use ideas different than what I typically would paint, so I see the two as completely separate entities.

IN 2016 YOU HAD THE RARE HONOR OF BEING INDUCTED INTO THE COWBOY ARTISTS HALL OF AMERICA. HOW HAS THIS COMMUNITY IMPACTED YOU AND YOUR WORK?
Being inducted has impacted me a lot, I didn’t ever consider myself a group or community type person until then. It has been very helpful to me over the years and quite inspirational. The friendships and the competitions have held a lot of importance to me and my work. The contacts with other painters and various galleries have been impactful to me as well.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOUR PRACTICE?
I’m currently working and proceeding as I always do. I’m exploring new ideas and often hoping to make something that is meaningful - enjoying the process along the way.
