Modern West is pleased to announce Stories from the Bone Box, a solo show of works by Utah-based artist Fidalis Buehler. The exhibition will be on view in Modern West’s main gallery September 19, 2025 through October 31, 2025.

Fidalis Buehler is a mixed-media artist living and working in northern Utah. Buehler received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu and his Master of Fine Arts from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he now teaches as an associate professor of studio art. Buehler’s work manifests complex representations of identity, with each piece becoming a self-portrait of mythology, dreams, revelation, magic, mysticism and ritual. His practice is intuitive, often incorporating the playful layering, removing and mixing of materials as they are placed on the canvas.

According to the artist, the phrase "Stories from the Bone Box" is indicative of Pacific Island culture, where the “bones” directly reference ancestors, and the “box” is the container of which their stories are held and passed down to following generations. The exhibition will include a series of paintings, prints and sculptures embodying the dream-like nature of Buehler’s distinctive visual storytelling, with the installation of his work becoming the means to pass down stories from his very own “bone box.”

Buehler has spent recent years working through this mode of narrative building, noting the experience as one that “resolves what it means to be me” as someone with a mixed Pacific Island and Euro-American heritage. The featured artworks incorporate symbols and stories from the artist’s lived experience and identity-based creative practice, a few including; characters floating in and out of dream-like spaces, canines delivering messages, swimming pools becoming spaces of comfort, plants and gardeners personifying lineage, and birthday cakes existing as monoliths of mortality.
