• BILLY SCHENCK'S WILD WEST

    NOVEMBER 1 - DECEMBER 31

Billy Schenck transforms the mesas, open skies, and rugged wilderness of the American West into bold, cinematic compositions that reflect his deep appreciation for the region and its iconic imagery. Drawing on Pop Art and Photo-Realism, Schenck renders landscapes in a flattened, reductivist style, placing vibrant fields of color side by side rather than blending them. His distinctive paint-by-number technique creates striking contrasts between graphic precision and atmospheric depth, with colors softening and merging only in the expansive skies. Influenced by summers spent in the desert since early childhood, Schenck’s work captures both the beauty of the Western landscape and a sense of nostalgia for the mythology of the Wild West. Through his vivid palette, stylized forms, and innovative approach to representation, he offers a fresh and distinctly personal perspective on the American West.

  • Behind the Canvas: Billy Schenck's Process

  • Capturing on Film

Working from his own film photographs of the American West, Billy combines and reimagines imagery to create each composition. He then outlines areas of flat, unblended color, building his signature paint-by-number aesthetic. Blending photorealism with Pop Art, Schenck transforms the Western landscape into bold, graphic scenes.

    A Study in Color

With each shape outlined, Schenck approaches the canvas, determining which colors will fill each area using a paint-by-number approach. He considers how individual colors interact, contrast, and complement one another across the composition. This deliberate interplay of flat, distinct color fields creates his signature Pop Art aesthetic, transforming photographic imagery into bold, graphic paintings.

    Paint by Numbers Style

Schenck employs a paint-by-numbers approach, labeling pigments directly on his palette to create sharply defined shapes and striking juxtapositions of hue. This distinctive method, emphasizes bold contrasts of form and color. The sky is one of the few areas where he blends paint, introducing subtle gradations that add depth to the composition and a tension between Pop-Art and Photo-Realism.
